How to Block TikTok on Chrome

By Zalipoff Team · Updated August 15, 2026

To block TikTok on Chrome, install the free ZalipOff extension, add tiktok.com to the block list, and choose soft mode (a corner reminder) or hard mode (a full blocking overlay). One minute, no account, no site limit. This guide also covers system-level blocking, what to do about the phone app, and why desktop TikTok deserves more suspicion than it gets.

Desktop TikTok is the underrated problem. Everyone treats TikTok as a phone thing, but the web version at tiktok.com is fully featured: the same For You feed, autoplay, infinite scroll, now conveniently placed one tab away from your actual work. Worse, it feels innocent, because you are "at your computer working." The feed does not care which screen it plays on. Here is how to shut it down on every level.

Method 1: a browser extension

The fastest fix, and the only one with any nuance:

  1. Install ZalipOff from the Chrome Web Store and click Add extension.
  2. Add tiktok.com to your block list.
  3. Pick a mode. Hard mode is a fair default for TikTok: unlike YouTube, there is rarely a work reason to be there, so the screen simply dims behind a blocking overlay. Soft mode shows a reminder card instead, if you want a warning shot first.
  4. Choose your coach from 12 characters. People blocking TikTok tend to pick the strict ones. Make of that what you will.

ZalipOff escalates automatically if you keep coming back: first a reminder, then a block. It is free with no premium tier, needs no sign-up, and all data stays in your browser.

If your real enemy is specifically the algorithmic feed rather than the whole site, we wrote a separate guide on blocking the TikTok For You page, which lets you keep search and direct links while cutting the slot machine.

Extra friction that helps

A block works better when the road to the site is also less smooth. Three minutes of sabotage:

Method 2: built-in tools

Chrome itself cannot do this: there is no blocking option anywhere in chrome://settings. What exists outside the browser:

The hosts file

Editing your computer's hosts file blocks TikTok in every browser and app on the machine. On Windows, open C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts as administrator; on Mac, edit /etc/hosts with sudo. Add:

Then save and flush your DNS cache. The catches: you need admin rights (goodbye, corporate laptops), TikTok serves content from multiple subdomains so stray embeds may survive, and there is no scheduling. It is also trivially reversible by the one person who knows exactly which file to edit: you.

Router blocking

Most routers let you block tiktok.com for the whole network under access controls. This is the right tool for a household rule or kids' devices. As self-discipline it is weak, since any phone slides over to cellular data without noticing.

Parental controls

Screen Time on Mac can block specific websites system-wide, and it holds if someone else keeps the passcode. Setting it up against yourself is theater, but sometimes theater with a four-digit delay is enough friction to break the reflex.

Method 3: on your phone

Being straight with you: ZalipOff is desktop-only, no mobile app, no sync. And for TikTok the phone is usually the main event. What actually helps there: on iPhone, Screen Time can put a daily limit on the TikTok app and block tiktok.com in the browser under Content and Privacy Restrictions. On Android, Digital Wellbeing app timers do the same, and Focus mode can pause TikTok during work hours. TikTok's own screen time settings exist, but they are dismissible with one tap and lean on the same self-control that got you here. A blunter option that genuinely works: delete the app entirely and keep only the mobile website, which is slower, uglier, and constantly nagging you to reinstall. Friction is the point. If the phone loop is the deeper issue, start with how to stop scrolling your phone.

What actually works long-term

TikTok is engineered to make each swipe cheaper than the decision to stop. That is why pure willpower loses, and why pure hard walls also tend to lose: the first stressful week, the wall starts feeling like the enemy, and you hold the uninstall button. The forbidden fruit effect is real, and a ban you resent is a ban you eventually revoke.

What holds is friction that scales. A soft reminder from a character you picked interrupts the autopilot without triggering the rebellion. If you barrel through anyway, escalation brings the hard block, and by then it feels earned rather than imposed. It also matters who delivers the message. A cold error page reads as the system versus you, and you will side with you every time. A character you picked yourself, pleading, sighing, or barking, reads as your own past decision showing up on schedule, and that is much harder to argue with. That staged approach is the core of ZalipOff, and the reasoning is unpacked in soft block vs hard block. If you are cutting back on more than one app, our social media detox plan gives the full playbook, and the block-any-site hub covers every other domain on your list.

One minute from now tiktok.com can be a dead end with a coach standing in it. ZalipOff is free forever, no account, nothing leaves your browser. Add it to Chrome.

Frequently asked questions

Can I block just the For You page instead of all of TikTok?

Yes. If you want to keep search and direct links but kill the algorithmic feed, that needs a more surgical approach. See our separate guide on blocking the TikTok For You page in your browser.

Does blocking TikTok on Chrome affect my phone?

No. A Chrome extension only works in desktop Chrome, and ZalipOff has no mobile app or sync. On your phone, use Screen Time on iPhone or Digital Wellbeing on Android to limit the TikTok app.

Is there a way to block TikTok without installing anything?

Yes: the hosts file blocks it computer-wide but needs admin rights, and your router can block it network-wide. Both work, neither has scheduling, and both are easy for you to reverse. An extension is faster and more flexible.

Will the block work in Incognito mode?

Extensions are disabled in Incognito by default. Go to chrome://extensions and turn on Allow in Incognito for your blocker, otherwise a private window becomes the workaround.

Should I use soft mode or hard mode for TikTok?

Hard mode is a reasonable default, since there is rarely a legitimate reason to be on TikTok during focus time. If a full block makes you rebellious, start with soft mode and let automatic escalation tighten things when you keep drifting.
